Collecting and Wearing Vintage

The vintage look is hot again! Renee Johnston and Michelle Webb, proprietors of Catwalk, an amazing L.A. vintage clothing boutique, will walk you through the jewel box shop where Mary Kate Olsen buys one-of-a-kind pieces. Catwalk is also a destination for celebrity stylists like Rachel Zoe, when they need a memorable vintage dress or purse for a celeb client.

The hip and well-appointed Catwalk is an oasis of unique clothes, shoes, handbags and jewels that you won't find anywhere else. Co-owner Renee Johnston has had a passion for fashion since she was a young girl who knew vintage was key because no one else would be dressed like she was! If you want to walk through the world in an original way, start wearing, and collecting, vintage!

Here are some tips from the gals at Catwalk:

-- When you're on the hunt, these are some of the highly collectible labels (that will likely increase in value): a black, quilted Chanel handbag; chunky jewelry from the '70s by YSL or Pierre Cardin; a mod piece from the '60s Courrèges collection; early Comme des Garcon pieces or Yohji Yamamoto and anything Gucci -- especially handbags, wallets and belts.

-- Get to know your fashion eras and which ones suit your personality and body type. In every era, there will always be fabulous clothes and accessories to suit your vintage mood. Check out Fashion-Era.com to bone up on fashion history and visit decades from the 1800s to the present.

-- Wear your vintage! Fashion trends (and your personal tastes) change over time, so wear a piece for a while, store it, and then bring it out again when it feels fashion forward.

-- Don't wear vintage from head-to-toe. You want a distinctive look, not a dated one. So mix it up with new pieces.

-- Make sure the garment or accessory is in excellent condition. If there is a flaw, be certain it can be easily repaired.

I have known Renee Johnson since 1970 where she had the hottest collection of vintage clothing on Portobello Rd in London. She has an amazing eye and can put the look together mixing vintage and new. Renee styled me in creamy Edw ardian lace worn over a 30's bias-cut slinky silk gown with chunky Middle/Eastern jewellry for my job at Churchill's Caberet and photo shoots. I love her!
